چکیده

Purpose. According to the self-focus theory of choking under pressure, conscious control of automated processes leads to a disruption of movement execution and deterioration in performance. In this study we examined whether analogy learning is a method to prevent choking under pressure. Basic procedures. Novice golfers learned the full swing over a period of six weeks either in a traditional way with technical instructions or with analogy instructions. Their performances were assessed in an indoor golf simulator. Attentional processes were measured using a dual task paradigm. Different kinds of learning instructions are linked to measures of skill-focused attention under low and high pressure conditions. Main findings. Performance scores in the dual task show that pressure leads to an increase in skill-focused attention of the technical learning group, compared to a decrease in skill-focused attention of the analogy learning group. Conclusions. Attentional processes under pressure are related to the method (analogy vs. technical instructions) implemented in the learning phase. key words: motor learning, implicit learning, attentional processes

Choking under pressure in tennis serve performance: An attentional demand explanation

In this investigation the authors presented an attentional demand explanation for the choking under pressure occurred in sport skills. For this porpouse, attentional demands in tennis serve performance was compared under low and high pressure conditions by using dual task paradigm. Twenty tennis players served as participants and performed sixty serves as primary task in low and high (competiti...

2 Human attention and its implications for human–computer interaction

Remembering planned activities, resuming tasks previously interrupted, recalling the names of colleagues, sustaining focused performance under the pressure of interruptions, ensuring that we don’t miss important information . . . these are only a few examples of critical activities whose performance is guided by attentional processes. This chapter proposes that knowledge about attentional proce...

Choking under pressure: multiple routes to skill failure.

Poor performance in pressure-filled situations, or "choking under pressure," has largely been explained by two different classes of theories. Distraction theories propose that choking occurs because attention needed to perform the task at hand is coopted by task-irrelevant thoughts and worries. Explicit monitoring theories claim essentially the opposite-that pressure prompts individuals to atte...

The effects of attentional focus instructions on learning of balance task amongst Parkinson disease patients

Introduction: Studies with adults have shown that an external focus of attention results in more learning and greater automaticity than an internal focus. Hence, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of attentional focus instructions on learning of balance skill amongst patients with Parkinson disease. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, all Parkinson's disease patients referr...

Exploring Language Learners’ Cognitive Processes in On-line ESP Courses via Think-aloud Protocol Analysis

The present study aims to investigate language learners’ cognitive processes in on-line ESP courses. Three modes of inquiry are used: think-aloud protocol analysis, screen capture analysis, and correlation analysis. The theoretical foundations for the evaluation of the cognitive aspect of Ferdowsi Univeristy of Mashhad E-learning System are drawn from cognitive load theory, cognitive apprentice...
